Professor Berkhof died in 1957, at the age of 83. He was an outstanding American teacher and the author of some 22 books. After two pastorates, he began his long career as professor at Calvin Seminary, Grand Rapids, in 1906. Here he remained for 38 years, devoting his talents and immense stores of knowledge to the training of men for the ministry. His 'Systematic Theology' was his magnum opus, being revised and enlarged during his lifetime until it reached its present final form. Berkhof's loyalty to the well-defined lines of the Reformed Faith, his concise and compact style and his up-to-date treatment have made this work the most important twentieth century compendium of Reformed Theology. 'The work seemed particularly important to me', writes the author, 'in view of the widespread doctrinal indifference of the present day, of the resulting superficiality and confusion in the minds of many professing Christians, of the insidious errors that are zealously propogated even from the pupits, and of the alarming increase of all kinds of sects.

I've heard so much about Berkhof's "Systematic Theology" that I finally bought it. John MacArthur, R. C. Sproul (I believe), Ligon Duncan, etc., are scholars who I admire and respect who have suggested this book for students interested in Reformed, fundamentalist theology.Product details

Systematic Theology Louis Berkhof 9781941129562 Books Reviews
I bought the hard copy of this classic work to attend a study group. It is huge and heavy, but the writing is phenomenal. I am profoundly in awe of Berkhof's ability to make Biblical concepts clear, and also analyzed so thoroughly. He thinks of angles of view that I never would have come up with, but it give a holographic perception that I can ponder, and that affects my everyday life. I am no theology professor or seminarian, but this stuff is just plain crucial to a deeper understanding of the ramifications of beliefs. I have gained a fuller knowledge of God who He is, and how He acts. Rich and rewarding reading.
Great information, I recommend it to every minister, seasoned pastor and all practicing theologians. I enjoy reading diverse biblical study materials which in turn helps me with my own biblical and theological thought.
Berkhof has given us a masterpiece in his well known (among reformed circles) work Systematic Theology. This was the very first book on theology I read. Given to me by a friend, I quickly found myself pouring through the pages. Particularly refreshing is his treatment on man's relation to God. One question that is before every man is "How is a man justified before his God?" Berkhof covers the doctrine of Justification in a succint yet thorough manner. Throughout the book Berkhof combines Scripture with logical thinking. He also offers opposing and varying views so the reader can beware. This book is not to be neglected, but should be used as both a tool for reference, as well as a tool for personal growth and knowledge. It is not for the collection of dust.
With an extensive and easily navigatable table of contents this volume, as an e-book , is an exceptional theological tool.
An expert and extremely useful systematic theology useful across denominations. Written by a renowned Reform theologian this systematic theology offers a wealth of valuable information without pressing too heavily on dogmas that divide.
Dr. Berkhof is very good in his Systematic Theology. Not as academic as Dr. Hodge, so it is easier reading for those who do not have a strong background in Theology. Both Hodge and Berkhof write from a Reformed Theological background.
At the time I purchased this book, there were four different kindle versions listed, each with a different price, and the reviews for all of these plus all print editions were combined together. I could find only two reviews which addressed the kindle format, and both mentioned particular issues. But I have no idea which version they had originally been attached to. I checked the sample, and it looked hopeful, so I went ahead and bought the version with ASIN B01N6YQU6A.
Navigation On a , one can use the GO TO function to get to any chapter. In between the Cover and the Preface there is a full table of contents with links to divisions and subdivisions within the chapters. So if you know where the content you want is located, you can get there in a few steps.
But I did not see any sort of index. If you do not already know where the content you are interested in is located, you would need to use the search feature and hope that the key word(s) you select will be the same ones the author used in at least part of his discussion of the topic.
The lack of an index will not be a large problem for those wanted to read entire sections, and who can find the desired entire section in the table of contents. But depending on how well your device handles searches and its own indexing, the lack of an index could be an issue for some readers. I debated whether the lack of an index was enough to lower the rating from 5 stars to 4, but left it at 5 stars.
I have yet to read the entire book, but my initial skimming is consistent with my high hopes for it. Other reviewers have addressed the actual content in much greater detail, and I refer you to them on that subject.
Louis Berkhof's Systematic Theology is hands down the 'creme de la creme' of systematic theologies. I would say, however, if you are teaching theology, it would behoove you to present Berkhof's material "John Frame style," as Frame has a very friendly teaching manner. Not that Berkhof is all that difficult; he just uses some vocabulary terms 21st century readers may not be familiar with. Still, if you want the systematic theology by which others are measured, get Berkhof's Systematic Theology.
I've heard so much about Berkhof's "Systematic Theology" that I finally bought it. John MacArthur, R. C. Sproul (I believe), Ligon Duncan, etc., are scholars who I admire and respect who have suggested this book for students interested in Reformed, fundamentalist theology.
